A suspect has been arrested over the shooting of a family at a Queensland farm with three people dead and another in a serious condition in hospital.

Australian police has said it is questioning three people including the alleged shooter following the attack at a cattle ranch in Bogie, northern Queensland, on Thursday.

The people being questioned are reportedly neighbours of the victims.

Merv and Maree Schwartz have been named as the dead along with Ms Schwartz’s son Graham Tighe.

Another son Ross Tighe was wounded but able to alert the police by calling emergency services.

He was able to escape in a vehicle and was found in an “extremely critical” condition.

Mackay Detective Superintendent Tom Armitt said that “the person nominated as the alleged gunman is with us here in custody”, reported ABC News.

He continued: “What we do know is that all parties are neighbours, some conversation has occurred between the parties and resulted in a meeting up at the parties’ boundary line earlier that morning when the incident occurred.”

Police have said they are still piecing together what happened and working on the motive.

Ross Tighe was injured in the stomach and was found by police some distance from the shooting.

“We believe that the male was able to extract himself from the area when he was spoken to by a police officer many, many kilometres away from the crime scene,” reportedly said Spt Amitt.

Mr Tighe had emergency surgery on Thursday after being airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital and is now in a serious but stable condition.

Residents in the Bogie area have been told to avoid the area with many different crimes scenes in place.

Spt Armitt said that an “extensive” area of “hilly and heavily forested” terrain was being searched.

A Queensland Police statement read: “Three people have been confirmed deceased following a shooting at a rural property in Bogie near Collinsville this morning.

“Police were notified of a reports multiple people had been shot in the area around 9am. A man was located soon after in a vehicle at Flagstone with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was transported to hospital in a critical condition.

“After speaking with the man, officers made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act at 11.30am at a property of Sutherland Road.

“Upon canvassing the area, police deemed the location safe and a further exclusion zone was established at a property along Shannonvale Road where the shooting is believed to have occurred.

“Three people have since been located at the property deceased with gunshot wounds. Investigations remain ongoing into the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
