A man has been detained at Gatwick Airport as a car park is cordoned off by police.

There are also unconfirmed reports of armed police at the scene, with passengers landing to “total chaos” at the airport’s north terminal.

Sussex Police said on Twitter : We are currently dealing with an incident at Gatwick Airport.

“A man has been detained. As a precaution, a cordon is in place at the drop-off parking area at the North Terminal. We will provide more information as soon as we are able.”

One traveller posted an image of the scene showing police cars parked in a road.

Cassie Parkes tweeted: “Trying to get to Gatwick’s North Terminal and it’s closed completely, apparently due to a suspicious vehicle.”

Police have not confirmed if the incident is related to a suspicious vehicle.

Other passengers took to social media saying they had landed at North Terminal to “total chaos” with up to 20 police cars on the scene.

One Twitter user wrote: “I just landed at north terminal an hour ago and there’s an incident causing it to be shut off with at least 20 police cars + armed police etc. Had to walk to south terminal to get the train.”

Shuttle buses have also been cancelled to and from the north terminal.

It comes as travel chaos across a number of UK airports, including Gatwick, has hampered thousands of passengers’ journeys in recent weeks.

Last week it was reported Gatwick Airport was suffering a “meltdown every night” due to staff shortages in the air traffic control tower, insiders have revealed.

The lack of staff means bosses have repeatedly been forced to put restrictions on the number of flights arriving and taking off from the UK’s second largest airport, according to reports.

At one point last week the number of arrivals per hour was slashed from 34 to 22, piling misery on passengers.

However easyJet pilots warn the summer’s travel chaos hasn’t peaked yet.

A source told The Times that there have been “repeated issues” with air traffic control restrictions at Gatwick.

They said that the airport suffers a “nightly meltdown” with accumulated delays, adding: “By the end of the day it can be the case that airlines are forced to cancel the last flight of the day, either because the crew have gone out of working hours or because its arrival airport will be closed by the time it comes to landing.”
