A pro-Boris Johnson briefing is being circulated amongst MPs ahead of the landmark vote of no confidence tonight.

It says: “By backing Boris Johnson, we can choose today to focus on growing the economy, cutting taxes, making our streets safer, and busting the NHS backlogs.

“There is no alternative leader, no alternative plan, and no alternative way forward – so we should reject chaos and division and back the PM.”

The briefing claims that by backing the Prime Minister today, the Conservative Party can “move on from distractions and get on with the job”.

It also argues a leadership contest would be “extremely harmful to the country and the Conservative Party.”

It says: “A leadership contest would unleash a distracting, divisive and destructive civil war in the Conservative Party. It will not be quick – it would drag on for months, dominating the agenda and alienating voters.

“A blue-on-blue civil war will be vicious and tear the party apart. Voters will only hear: we are divided, distracted, and talking to ourselves about ourselves. The only person who will benefit is Keir Starmer.”
